Dr. Louis Burt

Dr. Louis Burt is a dynamic educator, musician, and martial artist with a passion for empowering others to reach their full potential. As the founder of iAMMA, he combines decades of expertise across academia, music, and martial arts to deliver innovative, research-backed programs that inspire growth and achievement. Louis's unique approach and proven success make him a trusted leader in his fields, offering unparalleled guidance for those ready to excel.

Ernest Lapornik

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Coach

Ernest is the head instructor at Hunter Valley Jiu-Jitsu, combining over a decade of martial arts expertise with a passion for teaching and inspiring students. He began his training under Luke Beston in 2007 and achieved his Black Belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in May 2021. A highly decorated competitor, Ernest has won numerous State and National medals and continues to compete occasionally while dedicating his energy to mentoring the next generation of martial artists.

In addition to his achievements on the mat, Ernest has a rich background in other martial arts, holding ranks in Hapkido, Kendo, and the Russian grappling art of Sambo, where he is recognized as one of the few internationally accredited coaches in Australia. Outside of martial arts, Ernest’s talents extend to engineering and music, showcasing his discipline and creativity in all areas of life. As a skilled engineer and multi-instrumentalist proficient in guitar, bass, and drums, he brings a well-rounded and thoughtful approach to his teaching, fostering success in his students both on and off the mats.

Jay Bichard

Senior iAMMA Tutor

Jay Bichard is a highly experienced teacher with over a decade in the field, dedicated to fostering a positive learning environment for primary school students of all ages. He has worked in various settings across the Hunter Valley, equipping him with the skills to support a diverse range of learners, including those with special educational requirements.

 

Jay holds a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) and has stepped into leadership roles as needed, filling in for Assistant Principals and Deputy Principals for extended periods. He has organised multiple excursions and professional development days, and his own classroom practices have been used as a demonstration for other teachers, exemplifying excellence in teaching. Passionate about empowering all learners, Jay is devoted to nurturing their growth and helping them reach their full potential.

Lara Comerford

iAMMA Tutor

Lara is a dedicated and dynamic educator with a passion for creating engaging and inclusive learning environments where every student can thrive. She began her tertiary journey at just 18 years old, pursuing a Bachelor of Business in Leadership and Management before continuing her studies with a Master of Teaching (Primary) at the University of Newcastle.

Lara has gained valuable experience through her placements and practicums in various primary schools across Newcastle and the Hunter region, where she worked with students of all ages from diverse backgrounds and learning needs. Her brief time as a practicum student under Dr. Louis Burt highlighted her exceptional work ethic, ability to build rapport, student-centred teaching approach, and deep passion for education. This makes her a perfect fit for the iAMMA team.

As Lara puts it:
"Every child deserves to feel inspired, valued, and capable in their learning journey. My goal is to create an inclusive classroom where students not only build academic skills but develop confidence, resilience, and a love for learning."

Outside of teaching, Lara enjoys spending quality time with her family, embracing the outdoors, and indulging in culinary adventures. She has a love for the beach and can often be found soaking up the sun on the weekends.

Tim Hopkin

Kick-boxing Coach

Timothy Hopkin has devoted nearly two decades to martial arts, demonstrating a unique blend of skill, dedication, and passion for teaching. Beginning his journey in Kaizen Ryu Freestyle Karate, he earned his black belt in 2013 alongside Louis. Now a 3rd Dan Black Belt, Tim is a seasoned martial artist with extensive experience in both training and competition.

​

Tim has represented Australia on the global stage in contact karate and kickboxing, earning accolades such as #1 Rated Competitor in Australasia (2020), the Bushido Cross, and the Budo Medallion. Beyond his competitive achievements, Tim is a committed mentor and regularly assists Louis in teaching kids' MMA classes, fostering confidence, discipline, and technical skills in young martial artists.

​

Tim continues to expand his expertise, training under Nigel Moore, a respected Muay Thai coach, and serving as Nigel’s second-in-charge for his kickboxing classes. Additionally, Tim is certified in the Army Combatives Program (ACP) Clearing Knife, Level 1, further enriching his repertoire as an instructor.
